Referees in modern day football have a lot of pressure on them. Their decisions can shape the outcome of a match, and they have only split seconds to make these decisions. Although their lives are made slightly easier by having officials around the pitch as well, the final decision will lie on their shoulders.
This past weekend we have seen Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg criticised for sending off Chelsea's Fernando Torres. The criticism comes as the second yellow card awarded to Torres was for diving, or simulation in its correct term.
Video replays played in super slow motion have shown that there was a very slight bit of contact on the sock of Fernando Torres, however I for one when watching in real time could not have told you any contact had been made.
I caught up with referee Michael Bonage to discuss the difficulties that a referee faces, from deciding whether somebody has dived or not and the aids in place to help referees make their decisions.
